Moving forward from the concept of General Health, last week EB and I held a workshop on Self-Care (Auto-Cuidado in Spanish). We focused this session on different ways we care for ourselves and ways we can make ourselves healthy. The workshop began by first discussing how we would care for something else…..a bouquet of flowers (not pictured, but were present). Flowers need water, air, sunshine, and soil rich in nutrients to grow and be healthy. Just like flowers, our bodies require care to thrive, feel well, and be healthy.
With these thoughts in mind, the girls were then asked to complete a short writing assignment answering the following questions. How do we care for ourselves? AND What are some things we do that make us feel well or healthy?
After writing about self-care, we gathered together in a group and shared our different thoughts on how we care for ourselves and the different things that makes us feel well. The responses to these questions varied, but many felt the following were important aspects of self-care: hand-washing, exercise, drinking water, eating healthy, not spending time in the sun without sunscreen, spending time with friends and family, and clean spaces.
To continue with the lesson, and to incorporate photography into the workshop, everyone in attendance then
chose two to three aspects of self-care that they wanted to represent through pictures. Cameras were dispersed amongst the group, and the girls were off to capture the concept of self-care through a photo lens.
Below are some of the "Self-Care" photos that were taken. The photographs are accompanied by a short written reflection. (What is in or is happening in the photo? How does this represent self-care? Why is this important?)
